I have a GivEnergy system consisting of two batteries, two inverters and a controlling EMS (Energy Management System) which has not worked since Nov 2025. After six months I discovered Solar Tech Support, reached out to them and Ron phoned me back – how often do you get that service? Could not be more helpful – worked directly with me over the phone, outside what I would call normal working hours. Lucid explanations and we were able to discuss the issues and history using camera and email history. As this was a very rare setup, Ron was able to access an EMS expert in the field to confirm the solution. One sunny day in, I am now only paying for standing charge and a few pence for spikes in grid consumption while battery catches up with house demand.

When my GivEnergy system had an issue, I was completely left without support and had honestly lost all hope. Thankfully, I searched online and found Ron, which completely turned things around. After sending him a message, he responded incredibly fast and called me to assure me that he would get the problem fixed. I really admire his dedicated, supportive nature and his determination to find a solution. With this kind of outstanding attitude and customer service, he has absolutely secured a future customer in me.

Ron want out of is way to help, nothing was to much. He was very thorough in what he did Very knowledgeable I would highly recommend Ron and his company He did a fantastic job for me. if you have any problems, he'll do his best to help you out and resolve your problem. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them

Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. It may be that a fix becomes available over the summer which would make a lot of GivEnergy customers happy (Again)

Contacted Solar Tech Support in desperation. After explaining the issues I had with my system a diagnosis was made and a solution proposed. Fantastic service, even contacted a manufacturer to arrange replacement parts for me. Great communications, explained all they were doing and what I had to do, clearly and precisly. Followed up to confirm all was ok. Excellent service.

After GivEnergy went into liquidation, just my luck, my battery started playing up (internal board crashed). Contacted my installer - not interested! Found Solar tech support on a Google search. Sooo glad I found this company! Ron is extremely helpful and has plenty of experience. He soon confirmed what the fault was, and helped me to get my system up and running again. Now moved my GivEnergy account to Solar tech support, and will definitely use again if I have more issues. Unusual to find such a helpful company in these times, no morons reading scripts, just direct contact with the engineer.

Contacted Solar Tech Support when trying to understand what my Givenergy inverter problem might be and what might be my options. Received good/honest advise which backed up my thoughts.

Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

I can add to the list of customers who had already 'given up' on GivEnergy due to their appalling customer service, and that was before they went into administration (their Trustpilot reviews don't lie!). So you can imagine my desperation when, having changed my ISP and my Inverter, predictably, proving to be the only device that didn't connect automatically to my new network, I found zero prospect of any customer support with GivEnergy having called in the administrators just five days earlier! The salvation came from Solar Tech Support. My IT advisor stumbled across their web site and some very helpful tips for beleaguered GivEnergy customers, as well as an offer to provide direct assistance. Nothing ventured, I decided to drop them an E-Mail, with very low expectations based on my experience of GivEnergy customer support. Within an hour Ron had responded with some pin point advice, and after a few exchanges of E-Mails he had nailed the problem, enabling the combined efforts of my IT advisor and solar installer to resolve it and reconnect my Inverter. Thank you Solar Tech Support, and Ron in particular, for coming to the aid of a deserted and despondent GivEnergy customer. Expert, razor sharp advice and first class customer service, even though I wasn't officially a customer.

This company are a rare gem, I had a very unusual problem following a failed firmware upgrade on my GivEnergy kit. I then found out GivEnergy were in administration and had dismissed all their support staff! None of the usual fixes to try and restore my inverter comms would work, and I looked everywhere, forums, GivEnergy youtube support videos - even AI couldn't figure it out. My installer was talking about huge sums for system replacements, and being vague / evasive about if they'd even install replacement GivEnergy inverter. Enter Solar Tech Support, reassuring and knowledgeable from the very start, I've learnt loads about my solar system though the friendly chat while my engineer worked as he diagnosed the problem and figured out a fix procedure that I've not found anywhere else - amazing . If you need solar system repairs - especially if you like me have been left high and dry by GivEnergy, I cannot recommend this company enough. Give them a call.

I sent a message on their website regarding a problem I have on my Givenergy system. Although not supplied by Ronald, I thought it was worth an email. Within the hour on a Saturday, he phoned and we discussed the problem. He logged in remotely and gave excellent advice. I'm too far away for his on-site help but he did diagnose the problem and was happy also to chat through my thoughts about an upcoming solar/battery install I'm planning. Great bloke.... if only he was nearer!

What's included

G98/G99 Assessment

We review your inverter specifications and system configuration to determine whether G98 or G99 applies. The threshold is 3.68 kW per phase of inverter output — not panel capacity, not battery size. We confirm the correct route before filing anything.

Application Preparation

Each DNO has its own portal and form requirements. We prepare the full application with your system specifications, MPAN, site address, and supporting documentation formatted to match the specific DNO's requirements.

Submission & Tracking

We submit the application directly via the correct DNO portal, track it through to acceptance, and provide you with the confirmation reference number. For G99, we follow up throughout the approval window.

Export Limit Configuration

If the DNO approval includes conditions — an export limit, reactive power setting, or other parameter — we can configure these in your inverter remotely, ensuring your system complies with the approval letter from day one.

Ideal for

New solar or battery installation that needs G98 notification or G99 approval before going live
Installer went bust and never filed the DNO paperwork — system is unregistered
Upgrading from a smaller inverter to a larger unit and the change pushes you from G98 to G99
Rejected SEG application because DNO registration is missing or incorrect
Bought a house with solar and the previous owner's DNO paperwork is missing or filed under the wrong name

How it works

1

We assess your system and determine the correct application

G98 or G99 is determined by your inverter's maximum export capacity — not your panel output, not your battery size. The single-phase threshold is 3.68 kW. We review your inverter model and system configuration to confirm which standard applies and whether Fast Track G99 is available. If your system is already installed but unregistered, we determine whether a retrospective G98 notification or a retrospective G99 application is needed.

2

Application prepared with correct documentation

Each of the five UK DNOs has its own portal, forms, and documentation requirements. We prepare the full application package: system specifications, inverter model and serial number, total generation capacity, export capacity, MPAN, site address, and installation date. Everything formatted to match the specific DNO's requirements so nothing is sent back for correction.

3

Submitted and tracked through to confirmation

We submit the application via the correct DNO connections portal. For G98, this is a notification — no approval wait. For Fast Track G99, the DNO has 20 business days to respond; if they don't object, the connection is deemed approved. For standard G99, the window extends to 65 business days. We track the application and follow up with the DNO if needed until you have a confirmed registration reference number.

4

Export limit and conditions configured

G99 approvals often include conditions — a specific export limit, reactive power requirements, or communication settings. If your approval letter includes conditions, we can configure these in your inverter remotely so your system complies from day one. We also verify that your existing export limit settings match the DNO agreement, which is a common source of problems after smart meter installations.

G98 vs G99 — quick reference

The correct standard depends on your inverter's maximum export power, not your panel capacity or battery storage. Here's how the two standards compare. For a full breakdown, see our complete G98 vs G99 guide.

G98 ≤ 3.68 kW per phase

Post-installation notification only — no prior approval needed.

Submitted to your DNO after the system is installed and commissioned.

No waiting period. System can export immediately once notification is filed.

Applies to most standard single hybrid inverters (e.g. GivEnergy Hybrid 3.6 Gen 3, SolarEdge 3.68 kW).

G99 > 3.68 kW per phase

Formal application required — must be approved before installation begins.

Fast Track G99: DNO responds within 20 business days (~4 weeks).

Standard G99: DNO responds within 65 business days (~13 weeks).

Applies to larger hybrid inverters (e.g. GivEnergy Hybrid 5.0/8.0 Gen 3, Sunsynk 5 kW+).

Common misconception: G98 and G99 are determined by inverter output power, not battery storage capacity. You can have 47.5 kWh of battery storage and still fall under G98 if your inverter is rated at 3.68 kW or below. Conversely, a system with no battery at all but a 5 kW inverter requires G99. See our full guide for details.

Not sure which applies to your system? We determine the correct standard as part of the service — just tell us your inverter brand and model when you book.

When you need DNO application support

DNO registration is a legal requirement for any grid-connected generation system in the UK. These are the most common situations where our support is needed.

Installer never filed the paperwork

The most common issue. The installer commissioned the system but never submitted the G98/G99 notification. This can block SEG payments, cause problems during property sales, and technically means your system is non-compliant. We file retrospectively. See also: DNO paperwork recovery guide.

System upgrade changes export capacity

Upgrading from a 3.6 kW to a 5 kW inverter, or adding a second inverter, may push your export capacity above the G98 threshold into G99 territory. A new or amended application is required before the upgrade is commissioned. We handle the variation and new submission.

SEG application rejected

Energy suppliers require confirmed DNO registration before accepting a Smart Export Guarantee application. If your SEG was rejected due to missing registration, we file the DNO application, obtain confirmation, and you can resubmit with the reference number.

Bought a house with existing solar

You've moved into a property with solar panels and the previous owner's documentation is incomplete or missing. We check DNO registration status, file retrospectively if needed, and ensure the registration reflects the current ownership.

Constrained network area

Some DNOs require G99 even for systems below the 3.68 kW threshold if your area has reached cumulative generation capacity limits. We check your area status with the DNO and handle the G99 submission if required, including any export limitation conditions.

Export limit issues after smart meter

Smart meter installations can disrupt export limit settings, sometimes capping export to 0 kW. We verify your inverter's export settings match the DNO agreement and correct any mismatches. If the DNO agreement itself needs updating, we handle the variation. See also: export limitation guide.

FAQ

Frequently asked

G98 applies to solar or battery systems with an inverter output of 3.68 kW or less per phase. It requires only a post-installation notification to the DNO — no prior approval needed. G99 applies to systems above 3.68 kW per phase, or in network-constrained areas regardless of size, and requires a formal application and DNO approval before installation. Most domestic systems above the G98 threshold qualify for Fast Track G99 with a 20 business day response window. For a full breakdown, see our G98 vs G99 explained guide.
Yes. If your installer failed to submit the G98 notification or G99 application — whether they went bust, simply neglected it, or filed it incorrectly — we can file a retrospective application on your behalf. The DNO needs your system specifications, MPAN, and installation date. We handle the entire process and provide you with the confirmation reference number. This is one of the most common reasons people use this service. See our DNO paperwork recovery guide for more detail on the situation.
Fast Track G99 has a 20 business day response window — approximately four weeks. If the DNO does not object within that period, the connection is deemed approved and installation can proceed. Standard G99, used for larger or more complex installations, allows the DNO up to 65 business days (approximately 13 weeks). G98 notifications are immediate — no approval wait required, the system can export as soon as the notification is filed. We prepare and submit as quickly as possible so the clock starts straight away.
It depends on whether the change affects your inverter's maximum export capacity. Adding a battery to an existing hybrid inverter usually does not change the export capacity — the inverter is already rated and registered. No new application needed. But upgrading to a larger inverter (for example, moving from a 3.6 kW to a 5 kW unit) increases export capacity above the G98 threshold and requires a G99 application or G99 variation. Adding extra batteries also does not change the G98/G99 status — it's always about inverter output, not storage capacity. We assess your specific situation and handle whichever application is needed. See also: adding a battery guide.
An unregistered system creates several problems. Your DNO may issue a disconnection notice if they discover the installation during a network survey or smart meter installation. You will not qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), meaning you cannot be paid for electricity exported to the grid. It can complicate property sales, as conveyancing solicitors increasingly check for DNO registration as part of the purchase process. And technically, an unregistered grid-connected generator is non-compliant with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations (ESQCR). We file retrospective applications to resolve this — the process is straightforward once you have the right documentation.
All five UK distribution network operators: UK Power Networks (UKPN) covering South East England, East England, and London; National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED, formerly Western Power Distribution) covering the Midlands, South West, and Wales; Northern Powergrid (NPg) covering North East England and Yorkshire; SP Energy Networks (SPEN/Scottish Power) covering Central and Southern Scotland plus Merseyside and North Wales; and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) covering Northern Scotland and Southern England. Each DNO has its own portal and submission process — we know them all.
