Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. I can add to the list of customers who had already 'given up' on GivEnergy due to their appalling customer service, and that was before they went into administration (their Trustpilot reviews don't lie!). So you can imagine my desperation when, having changed my ISP and my Inverter, predictably, proving to be the only device that didn't connect automatically to my new network, I found zero prospect of any customer support with GivEnergy having called in the administrators just five days earlier! The salvation came from Solar Tech Support. My IT advisor stumbled across their web site and some very helpful tips for beleaguered GivEnergy customers, as well as an offer to provide direct assistance. Nothing ventured, I decided to drop them an E-Mail, with very low expectations based on my experience of GivEnergy customer support. Within an hour Ron had responded with some pin point advice, and after a few exchanges of E-Mails he had nailed the problem, enabling the combined efforts of my IT advisor and solar installer to resolve it and reconnect my Inverter. Thank you Solar Tech Support, and Ron in particular, for coming to the aid of a deserted and despondent GivEnergy customer. This company are a rare gem, I had a very unusual problem following a failed firmware upgrade on my GivEnergy kit. I then found out GivEnergy were in administration and had dismissed all their support staff! None of the usual fixes to try and restore my inverter comms would work, and I looked everywhere, forums, GivEnergy youtube support videos - even AI couldn't figure it out. My installer was talking about huge sums for system replacements, and being vague / evasive about if they'd even install replacement GivEnergy inverter. Before you update

Should you update your GivEnergy firmware?

If your system is working correctly, there is no compelling reason to update. Every firmware update carries a risk of resetting settings and occasionally introduces new bugs. The question to ask is: what specific problem does this update fix?

UPDATE IF
GivEnergy support has specifically advised an update to fix a fault you're experiencing
A known bug in your current version is actively affecting your system's performance or safety
A security vulnerability patch has been released
Your installer or GivEnergy has pushed an update during commissioning
DO NOT UPDATE IF
Your system is working correctly and generating normally
You're in the middle of a charge window or overnight schedule
You haven't noted down your current settings — a reset could lose your tariff configuration
An update is available simply because it's newer — newer is not always better
Before any update: screenshot your current settings. Go to My Inverter → System Mode Settings and take screenshots of every setting on screen — system mode, AC charge times, discharge cut-off, export limit, EPS configuration. If the update resets everything, you have a reference to restore from.
Problem 1 — very common
Very common

Firmware update reset all my settings

GivEnergy firmware updates regularly reset settings to factory defaults. The system continues to operate but in a default configuration that may be completely wrong for your tariff and usage — costing money daily until corrected. The most common symptom is the battery no longer charging overnight despite your off-peak tariff being active.

Settings to check and restore after every firmware update

System mode
My Inverter → System Mode
Default resets to Mode 1 (self-consumption only). If you're on Octopus Go, Agile, Intelligent, or any other off-peak tariff, this should be set to Mode 4 (Timed Charge/Discharge) or the appropriate mode for your tariff. An incorrect system mode is the single biggest cause of post-update battery problems.
AC charge enable & times
System Mode Settings → Timed Charge
AC charge (charging from the grid during off-peak hours) is often disabled after a reset. Re-enable it and confirm the charge start and end times match your tariff's cheap rate window — e.g. 00:30–05:30 for Octopus Go.
Discharge cut-off SoC
Battery Options → Discharge cut-off
The minimum SoC the battery will discharge to before stopping. Often resets to a higher value (e.g. 20%) after an update. If you want the battery to discharge fully, confirm this is set to 4% (minimum recommended). If you have EPS, confirm the EPS reserve is also correct.
Export limit
Advanced Settings → Export limit
If your DNO has imposed an export limit (commonly 3.68kW on single-phase), check this is correctly set after an update. A reset export limit of 0W will prevent any grid export. An incorrectly high limit may violate your G98/G99 conditions. Export limit guide →
EPS / backup settings
System Mode or Battery Options → EPS
EPS is off by default and firmware updates reset this. If your system has an EPS circuit wired, re-enable EPS and confirm the reserve SoC setting. A reset EPS means no backup power during the next outage. EPS guide →
CT clamp direction
Advanced Settings → CT orientation
Uncommon but possible — some firmware versions reset the CT clamp orientation flag. Check the portal power flow diagram: if import and export readings appear inverted, the CT direction may have reset. CT clamp guide →
Problem 2
Portal connectivity

Firmware update broke the portal connection

Some firmware updates introduce bugs that prevent the dongle from connecting to GivEnergy's cloud servers. The dongle connects to your home WiFi (solid LED) but the portal shows offline or no data. The system continues to generate but cannot be monitored or controlled remotely.

Confirming the update caused the outage

Portal went offline within minutes or hours of the update completing
Dongle LED is solid — WiFi connection is fine
Power cycling the dongle doesn't restore connectivity
Portal was working before the update with no network changes on your side

What to do

Contact GivEnergy support at support@givenergy.co.uk and reference your inverter serial number and the firmware version currently running. GivEnergy can verify connectivity from their side and push a patch if it's a known cloud communication bug.

If GivEnergy cannot resolve it remotely, a local firmware update using the USB method (see below) may be needed to restore a working version. GivEnergy will provide the correct firmware file on request.

Problem 3
Failed / stuck update

Firmware update stuck, failed, or inverter not responding

The update initiated but hasn't completed. The portal shows the system is "updating" and has been for a long time, or the inverter appears unresponsive after an update attempt.

If the update has been running for over an hour

According to GivEnergy's firmware guide: a remote update should take 5–30 minutes. If it is still showing as updating after one hour, restart the inverter — turn off the AC isolator below the inverter, wait 60 seconds, turn it back on. After restart, check My Inverter → Software to see the current firmware version and determine whether the update completed or needs to be re-attempted.

Do not interrupt before one hour. Interrupting a firmware update in progress can corrupt the firmware. Wait the full hour before restarting.

If the update failed and the system is now unresponsive

A corrupted firmware flash can leave the inverter unable to boot normally. In this state, a remote update via the portal is not possible — the dongle cannot communicate with a non-booting inverter. A local firmware update using the USB method is required.

Contact GivEnergy support for the correct firmware file for your inverter model and serial number before attempting a local update. Flashing with the wrong file can cause further damage. See the local update guide below.

Method 1
Remote update

Remote firmware update via the GivEnergy portal

The remote update is the standard method — no physical access to the inverter is needed. It attempts to update both the inverter and battery firmware in a single operation.

Screenshot your current settings first

Before starting, go to My Inverter → System Mode Settings and photograph or screenshot every setting visible. This is your restore reference if the update resets your configuration.

Log into givenergy.cloud → My Inverter → Software

The Software tab shows your current firmware version for the inverter, battery, and dongle. If an update is available, an Update button will appear. If the system is already on the latest firmware, no update option is shown.

Press Update and wait — do not turn the system off

According to GivEnergy's guide, the update takes 5–30 minutes. Do not turn the inverter or battery off during this period. Do not close the portal tab — monitor the progress. The system may go offline briefly during the update.

Timing: Do not start a remote update overnight or during a scheduled charge window. The safest time is mid-morning on a day when the battery is not near full charge — this minimises the impact of any update-related reset.

After update — check and restore all settings

Once the update completes, go back to System Mode Settings and compare every setting against your screenshots. Restore anything that has changed. Pay particular attention to system mode, AC charge enable, charge times, and export limit.

Method 2
Local update — advanced

Local firmware update via USB — inverter and battery

Used when a remote update has failed or the inverter cannot reach the portal. Requires GivEnergy to provide the firmware files — contact support@givenergy.co.uk with your serial number before starting. Do not use firmware files from any other source.

Local updates involve opening the battery enclosure. The battery local update procedure requires removing the front panel of the battery with a 5mm allen key. This must only be done after fully isolating the battery (DC MCB off, battery button held off, 1 hour wait). If you are not comfortable doing this, contact your installer or a qualified engineer.
Inverter local update
Gen 2 inverters only: Before starting, locate the DIP switches underneath the inverter and switch them all to the down position. Use a blank USB stick in the USB port. You do not need the MSN.TXT file for Gen 2.
1. Remove the WiFi dongleUnscrew the two screws underneath the inverter and remove the dongle. Plug it into your PC or laptop. (Skip for Gen 2 — use a blank USB instead.)
2. Prepare the dongleOn the dongle drive, keep the file named MSN and delete all other files.
3. Add the firmware filesCopy the two files provided by GivEnergy onto the dongle. They must be named exactly ARMStore.bin and DSPStore.bin. Do not rename them.
4. Reinstall and waitPlug the dongle back into the inverter and replace the screws. The update may take up to 20 minutes. Do not interrupt.
Battery local update
Full isolation required. Isolate DC MCB (down), turn battery off with side button, wait 1 full hour before opening the battery front panel.
1. Isolate and power downMove the DC MCB to the down/off position. Press and hold the battery side button until all LEDs go out. Wait 1 full hour.
2. Open the battery front panelRemove the front cover screws with a 5mm allen key. Inside you will see the BMS board and a silver USB drive plugged in.
3. Prepare the USB driveRemove the USB from the BMS. Plug into your PC, delete all existing files, and add the file provided by GivEnergy. It must be named exactly BMS_ARM.bin.
4. Reinstall and power onPlug the USB back into the BMS. Replace the front panel. Turn the battery on with the side button — a loud beep indicates a successful update. Move the DC MCB back to the up/on position.
5. Email GivEnergyAfter completing the battery local update, email GivEnergy to verify and calibrate the battery.

FAQ

GivEnergy firmware questions

Almost certainly a settings reset. The firmware update reset your system mode from Mode 4 (Timed Charge/Discharge) back to Mode 1 (self-consumption only), and disabled AC charge. Log into the portal, go to System Mode Settings, and restore your previous configuration — set the correct system mode, re-enable AC charge, and confirm your charge window times match your tariff. Log into givenergy.cloud → My Inverter → Software. This page shows the current firmware version for the inverter ARM, inverter DSP, battery BMS, and dongle separately. The Software page also shows whether an update is available. This is also where you trigger a remote update.
Yes, in most cases. You cannot roll back via the portal — it only offers the latest version. However, GivEnergy can provide an older firmware file on request for a local USB update. Contact support@givenergy.co.uk with your inverter serial number and explain which version you want to return to and why. GivEnergy will advise whether that rollback is safe for your specific model.
GivEnergy firmware updates are not automatic for end users via the standard portal — you must trigger them manually from My Inverter → Software. However, GivEnergy or your installer may push firmware updates remotely without notifying you, particularly during commissioning or if a critical bug fix is needed. If your settings suddenly changed overnight with no action on your part, check the Software tab for a recent firmware version change.
Yes — leave it alone. Do not turn the inverter or battery off during an active update. The update should complete within 5–30 minutes according to GivEnergy's guide. If it is still showing "updating" after one hour, then restart the inverter by turning the AC isolator off for 60 seconds and back on. After restart, check the Software tab to confirm the firmware version and whether the update completed.
