I have a GivEnergy system consisting of two batteries, two inverters and a controlling EMS (Energy Management System) which has not worked since Nov 2025. After six months I discovered Solar Tech Support, reached out to them and Ron phoned me back – how often do you get that service? Could not be more helpful – worked directly with me over the phone, outside what I would call normal working hours. Lucid explanations and we were able to discuss the issues and history using camera and email history. As this was a very rare setup, Ron was able to access an EMS expert in the field to confirm the solution. One sunny day in, I am now only paying for standing charge and a few pence for spikes in grid consumption while battery catches up with house demand.

Ron want out of is way to help, nothing was to much. He was very thorough in what he did Very knowledgeable I would highly recommend Ron and his company He did a fantastic job for me. if you have any problems, he'll do his best to help you out and resolve your problem. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them

Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. It may be that a fix becomes available over the summer which would make a lot of GivEnergy customers happy (Again)

Contacted Solar Tech Support in desperation. After explaining the issues I had with my system a diagnosis was made and a solution proposed. Fantastic service, even contacted a manufacturer to arrange replacement parts for me. Great communications, explained all they were doing and what I had to do, clearly and precisly. Followed up to confirm all was ok. Excellent service.

After GivEnergy went into liquidation, just my luck, my battery started playing up (internal board crashed). Contacted my installer - not interested! Found Solar tech support on a Google search. Sooo glad I found this company! Ron is extremely helpful and has plenty of experience. He soon confirmed what the fault was, and helped me to get my system up and running again. Now moved my GivEnergy account to Solar tech support, and will definitely use again if I have more issues. Unusual to find such a helpful company in these times, no morons reading scripts, just direct contact with the engineer.

Contacted Solar Tech Support when trying to understand what my Givenergy inverter problem might be and what might be my options. Received good/honest advise which backed up my thoughts.

Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

I can add to the list of customers who had already 'given up' on GivEnergy due to their appalling customer service, and that was before they went into administration (their Trustpilot reviews don't lie!). So you can imagine my desperation when, having changed my ISP and my Inverter, predictably, proving to be the only device that didn't connect automatically to my new network, I found zero prospect of any customer support with GivEnergy having called in the administrators just five days earlier! The salvation came from Solar Tech Support. My IT advisor stumbled across their web site and some very helpful tips for beleaguered GivEnergy customers, as well as an offer to provide direct assistance. Nothing ventured, I decided to drop them an E-Mail, with very low expectations based on my experience of GivEnergy customer support. Within an hour Ron had responded with some pin point advice, and after a few exchanges of E-Mails he had nailed the problem, enabling the combined efforts of my IT advisor and solar installer to resolve it and reconnect my Inverter. Thank you Solar Tech Support, and Ron in particular, for coming to the aid of a deserted and despondent GivEnergy customer. Expert, razor sharp advice and first class customer service, even though I wasn't officially a customer.

This company are a rare gem, I had a very unusual problem following a failed firmware upgrade on my GivEnergy kit. I then found out GivEnergy were in administration and had dismissed all their support staff! None of the usual fixes to try and restore my inverter comms would work, and I looked everywhere, forums, GivEnergy youtube support videos - even AI couldn't figure it out. My installer was talking about huge sums for system replacements, and being vague / evasive about if they'd even install replacement GivEnergy inverter. Enter Solar Tech Support, reassuring and knowledgeable from the very start, I've learnt loads about my solar system though the friendly chat while my engineer worked as he diagnosed the problem and figured out a fix procedure that I've not found anywhere else - amazing . If you need solar system repairs - especially if you like me have been left high and dry by GivEnergy, I cannot recommend this company enough. Give them a call.

I sent a message on their website regarding a problem I have on my Givenergy system. Although not supplied by Ronald, I thought it was worth an email. Within the hour on a Saturday, he phoned and we discussed the problem. He logged in remotely and gave excellent advice. I'm too far away for his on-site help but he did diagnose the problem and was happy also to chat through my thoughts about an upcoming solar/battery install I'm planning. Great bloke.... if only he was nearer!

Overview

Solar-diverting 7kW EV charger with built-in PEN fault detection

The GIV-EV-7.2 is GivEnergy's 7kW AC home charger. The notable hardware features per the datasheet are the built-in Type B RCD (no external Type B RCD required, which simplifies the consumer-unit work and lowers install cost), integrated PEN Fault Detection (no earth rod required for the install), and OCPP 1.6J support (for energy-supplier remote-management use cases). The four configuration modes are set during commissioning and determine what the charger can do — from a simple grid-only schedule charger through to full solar-first charging coordinated with a GivEnergy inverter.

Built-in protection (datasheet)

· Type B RCD built-in — no external Type B RCD required
· Integrated PEN Fault Detection — no earth rod needed
· Over-voltage, under-voltage, over-load, over-temperature
· Earth-leakage, short-circuit, ground, surge protection
· OCPP 1.6J protocol support

Connectivity (datasheet)

· LAN (RJ-45) — recommended for stable installs
· WiFi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz supported)
· No special characters in SSID; outbound port 7654 / 7655
· Eero 6E mesh extenders are KB-incompatible
· OCPP 1.6J for energy-supplier integrations

Configuration modes

The four EV-charger configuration modes

Configuration is set at commissioning by the installer. Wrong mode is one of the most common reasons a charger appears to "work" but never charges from solar. Verify in the GivEnergy app under Settings → Other → EV Charger Modes.

Standalone

· No CT, no solar integration
· Grid charging only with schedule + RFID + app control
· Suitable when there is no solar or the property is grid-only
· Charge modes available: Grid, Schedule

CT Meter — third-party solar

· Wired CT meter on the grid tail (not a GivEnergy inverter)
· Dynamic load balancing + solar export detection
· Suitable for non-GivEnergy solar installations
· Charge modes: Grid, Schedule, Hybrid, Solar

Inverter Control Cloud — recommended for GivEnergy homes

· Charger + GivEnergy inverter on the same cloud account
· No physical comms cable between charger and inverter
· Full dynamic solar-first charging via cloud coordination
· Charge modes: Grid, Schedule, Hybrid, Solar
· Requires cloud uptime — post-May 2026 paid subscription

Inverter Control Local

· Charger hardwired to a GivEnergy inverter
· Real-time control without cloud dependency
· Suitable where cloud connectivity is unreliable
· Charge modes: Grid, Schedule, Hybrid, Solar

Prevent the EV charger discharging your home battery: in the GivEnergy portal expand the EV charger and select Grid mode under Settings. This forces the charger to draw only from the grid and stops the battery being drained into the car. Useful overnight or whenever you want to preserve the home battery reserve.

Charge modes

Grid · Schedule · Hybrid · Solar — the four operational modes

Charge modes are set at the app/portal layer and tell the charger when and how to draw power. Hybrid and Solar require CT Meter or Inverter Control configuration; Grid and Schedule are available in all configurations.

Grid (always available)

· Charges from the grid at full 7kW
· No solar logic — best for cheap-rate overnight charging
· Stops the home battery being drained into the car

Schedule (always available)

· Timed charge window (Octopus Go, Intelligent, Agile etc.)
· Conflicts with vehicle-side schedules — disable one
· Timezone setting matters; if schedule misfires recreate it

Hybrid (CT Meter or Inverter Control)

· Solar-first, grid tops up to maintain minimum charge rate
· Maximises solar use without waiting for large export surpluses
· Best for cloudy / variable-export days

Solar (CT Meter or Inverter Control)

· Charges only on surplus solar export
· Charge rate rises and falls with available export
· CT clamp direction critical — reversed CT prevents charging

Schedule conflicts are the single most common "schedule not working" cause we see. If both the car and the GivEnergy app have schedules enabled, the vehicle's schedule typically wins. Pick one source of truth.

Post-administration warranty

Warranty position after 9 April 2026

The datasheet still states the GIV-EV-7.2 came with a 3-year manufacturer warranty (shorter than the 12-year warranty on the hybrid inverter and battery range). With GivEnergy Ltd in administration since 9 April 2026, the administrator has confirmed no further hardware warranties will be honoured by GivEnergy Ltd. The same alternative-recovery framework applies as for the rest of the range:

Routes that may still work

· Installer workmanship cover (if still trading)
· Insurance-backed guarantee (IBG) if you have the certificate
· Section 75 — Consumer Credit Act if paid by credit card
· MCS Consumer Code redress (if MCS-certified install)
· Consumer Rights Act 2015 against the retailer/installer

Routes that do not work

✗ Direct manufacturer warranty claim to GivEnergy Ltd
✗ Old support@givenergy.co.uk for warranty
✗ "GivEnergy Approved Installer" certification scheme
✗ "Register the warranty in your name" route

STS can prepare an engineer report identifying the EV-charger fault and confirming the cause is not installation-related — required evidence for any of the alternative routes above.

FAQ

GivEnergy EV Charger questions

Per the GivEnergy EV Charger datasheet (V2.0 NOV 25): 7kW / 32A output, 230V single-phase AC input, IEC 62196-2 Type 2 tethered cable with 5m length. The unit requires a 32A double-pole MCB at the consumer unit. Type B RCD is built into the charger per datasheet — no separate Type B RCD is required externally. PEN Fault Detection is also integrated, so no earth rod is required for installation.
Inverter Control Cloud is the typical mode for homes with a GivEnergy inverter on the same cloud account. The charger and inverter coordinate over the cloud — no physical comms cable is needed between them. For sites with limited cloud connectivity, Inverter Control Local uses a hardwired RS485 link between charger and inverter. CT Meter mode is for non-GivEnergy solar (wired CT meter on the grid tail). Standalone is grid-only with no solar integration.
Yes. In Standalone mode the GIV-EV-7.2 runs as a straight 7kW grid charger with schedule and RFID-card control via the GivEnergy app. In CT Meter mode it works alongside any third-party solar system via a wired CT meter on the grid tail — enables dynamic load balancing and Solar / Hybrid charge modes. Only the Inverter Control modes require a GivEnergy inverter.
Per the troubleshooting guide and app docs: solid green = ready and waiting for a vehicle. Solid blue = actively charging. Flashing blue = cable plugged in but the vehicle is not yet drawing — common when the car has its own schedule or charge limit active. Flashing red = fault, tamper switch triggered, or lost network connection. For a persistent flashing red, check the event log via the GivEnergy app, then contact STS for diagnostics.
Connectivity is the most common cause of EV-charger downtime. The KB-documented WiFi requirements: 2.4GHz or 5GHz supported (2.4GHz recommended for wall penetration), no spaces or special characters in the SSID, port 7654 or 7655 open outbound. Eero 6E mesh extenders are KB-explicit-incompatible — switch to wired LAN (RJ-45) or a dedicated 2.4GHz guest SSID. If the charger comes online on a mobile hotspot but not on home WiFi, the issue is your router or firewall — not the charger hardware.
Almost certainly not. Many EVs (Tesla, MG4, VW ID series, several others) default to an 80% daily charge ceiling to protect long-term battery health. Check your vehicle's charge settings in the infotainment screen or companion app. The GivEnergy charger delivers power up to whatever the car requests — when the car asks for less, the charger reduces output.
Per the datasheet, the manufacturer warranty on the GIV-EV-7.2 was 3 years (shorter than the 12-year warranty on the hybrid inverter and battery range). POST-ADMIN: GivEnergy Ltd entered administration on 9 April 2026 and the administrator has confirmed no further hardware warranties will be honoured by GivEnergy Ltd. Alternative recovery routes are installer workmanship cover, IBG, Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, MCS Consumer Code redress, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — same framework as for the rest of the GivEnergy range. See the warranty page.
