Pylontech Inverter Compatibility — PYLON Protocol Pairing & BMS Communication Fix

Your Pylontech battery won't communicate with the inverter. The inverter shows a BMS fault, the battery LEDs look normal, and nothing charges or discharges. Almost always a configuration issue — wrong battery type, wrong port, or wrong protocol. This guide walks through every pairing checkpoint.
  • PYLON protocol over RS485 or CAN
  • Works with Solis, Sofar, Victron, Lux, SolaX
  • Not compatible with GivEnergy or Fox ESS

I have a GivEnergy system consisting of two batteries, two inverters and a controlling EMS (Energy Management System) which has not worked since Nov 2025. After six months I discovered Solar Tech Support, reached out to them and Ron phoned me back – how often do you get that service? Could not be more helpful – worked directly with me over the phone, outside what I would call normal working hours. Lucid explanations and we were able to discuss the issues and history using camera and email history. As this was a very rare setup, Ron was able to access an EMS expert in the field to confirm the solution. One sunny day in, I am now only paying for standing charge and a few pence for spikes in grid consumption while battery catches up with house demand.

Ron want out of is way to help, nothing was to much. He was very thorough in what he did Very knowledgeable I would highly recommend Ron and his company He did a fantastic job for me. if you have any problems, he'll do his best to help you out and resolve your problem. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them

Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. It may be that a fix becomes available over the summer which would make a lot of GivEnergy customers happy (Again)

Contacted Solar Tech Support in desperation. After explaining the issues I had with my system a diagnosis was made and a solution proposed. Fantastic service, even contacted a manufacturer to arrange replacement parts for me. Great communications, explained all they were doing and what I had to do, clearly and precisly. Followed up to confirm all was ok. Excellent service.

After GivEnergy went into liquidation, just my luck, my battery started playing up (internal board crashed). Contacted my installer - not interested! Found Solar tech support on a Google search. Sooo glad I found this company! Ron is extremely helpful and has plenty of experience. He soon confirmed what the fault was, and helped me to get my system up and running again. Now moved my GivEnergy account to Solar tech support, and will definitely use again if I have more issues. Unusual to find such a helpful company in these times, no morons reading scripts, just direct contact with the engineer.

Contacted Solar Tech Support when trying to understand what my Givenergy inverter problem might be and what might be my options. Received good/honest advise which backed up my thoughts.

Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

I can add to the list of customers who had already 'given up' on GivEnergy due to their appalling customer service, and that was before they went into administration (their Trustpilot reviews don't lie!). So you can imagine my desperation when, having changed my ISP and my Inverter, predictably, proving to be the only device that didn't connect automatically to my new network, I found zero prospect of any customer support with GivEnergy having called in the administrators just five days earlier! The salvation came from Solar Tech Support. My IT advisor stumbled across their web site and some very helpful tips for beleaguered GivEnergy customers, as well as an offer to provide direct assistance. Nothing ventured, I decided to drop them an E-Mail, with very low expectations based on my experience of GivEnergy customer support. Within an hour Ron had responded with some pin point advice, and after a few exchanges of E-Mails he had nailed the problem, enabling the combined efforts of my IT advisor and solar installer to resolve it and reconnect my Inverter. Thank you Solar Tech Support, and Ron in particular, for coming to the aid of a deserted and despondent GivEnergy customer. Expert, razor sharp advice and first class customer service, even though I wasn't officially a customer.

This company are a rare gem, I had a very unusual problem following a failed firmware upgrade on my GivEnergy kit. I then found out GivEnergy were in administration and had dismissed all their support staff! None of the usual fixes to try and restore my inverter comms would work, and I looked everywhere, forums, GivEnergy youtube support videos - even AI couldn't figure it out. My installer was talking about huge sums for system replacements, and being vague / evasive about if they'd even install replacement GivEnergy inverter. Enter Solar Tech Support, reassuring and knowledgeable from the very start, I've learnt loads about my solar system though the friendly chat while my engineer worked as he diagnosed the problem and figured out a fix procedure that I've not found anywhere else - amazing . If you need solar system repairs - especially if you like me have been left high and dry by GivEnergy, I cannot recommend this company enough. Give them a call.

I sent a message on their website regarding a problem I have on my Givenergy system. Although not supplied by Ronald, I thought it was worth an email. Within the hour on a Saturday, he phoned and we discussed the problem. He logged in remotely and gave excellent advice. I'm too far away for his on-site help but he did diagnose the problem and was happy also to chat through my thoughts about an upcoming solar/battery install I'm planning. Great bloke.... if only he was nearer!

⚡ Safety Warning

Do not open your inverter or interfere with DC cabling. Solar panels produce live DC voltage whenever exposed to light. Always use your DC isolator switch and contact a qualified solar engineer for hands-on fault diagnosis.

ℹ️

Key point: Pylontech batteries are inverter-agnostic — they work with any inverter that supports the PYLON protocol. If the battery and inverter are not communicating, the fault is almost always in the inverter's configuration, not the battery itself.

Diagnostics

5-step Pylontech pairing diagnosis

When a Pylontech battery fails to pair with the inverter, the problem is in the communication layer — battery type selection, physical interface, protocol settings, or capacity configuration. Work through these steps in order.

1

Confirm the inverter supports Pylontech batteries

Pylontech batteries use the PYLON protocol — an open standard supported by most hybrid inverters. But not all inverters are open-protocol:

Compatible (open-protocol)

Solis, Sofar Solar, Victron, LuxPowerTek, SolaX, Deye, Sunsynk, and most other inverters with a BMS communication port supporting PYLON protocol.

Not compatible (closed systems)

GivEnergy and Fox ESS use proprietary battery systems. They only work with their own branded batteries. Pylontech cannot be paired with these inverters regardless of configuration.

If you have a closed-system inverter, no amount of configuration will establish communication. The only option is to use the inverter manufacturer's own battery.

2

Select the correct battery type on the inverter

This is the single most common pairing failure. The inverter must be set to the Pylontech or PYLON-specific battery type — not generic lithium or user-defined:

Battery type setting by inverter brand
Solis: Battery type → "Pylon" (in battery configuration menu)
Sofar: Battery type → "PYLON" (in SolarMan device settings)
Victron: Battery monitor → "Pylontech" (in VictronConnect)
SolaX: Battery type → "Pylon" (in installer menu)
Lux: Battery type → "Pylontech" (in LuxPowerTek portal)

If "generic lithium" or "user-defined" is selected, the inverter sends the wrong communication commands. The Pylontech BMS does not respond, and the inverter reports a BMS communication fault.

3

Verify the communication interface — RS485 or CAN

Pylontech batteries have separate ports for RS485 and CAN bus. The cable must be in the correct port:

CAN bus (most common): RJ45 cable from the Pylontech CAN port to the inverter BMS/CAN port. Used by most modern pairings.
RS485: Used by some older setups and specific Victron configurations. Different port on the Pylontech module.
Wrong port = silent failure: If the cable is plugged into RS485 but the inverter expects CAN (or vice versa), there is no error message — just no communication.

Check the inverter manual for which interface it uses with Pylontech. The Pylontech installation manual shows the port locations for each model.

4

Check the baud rate and DIP switch settings

For RS485 connections, the baud rate must match between inverter and battery:

Pylontech default RS485 baud rate: 9600
Some inverters expect: 115200 or other rates — check inverter documentation
DIP switches on Pylontech: Some models allow baud rate and addressing changes via DIP switches on the side of the module

In a multi-module stack, the DIP switches also set which module is the master (communicates with the inverter) and which are slaves. Only one module should be set as master. If two modules have the master DIP switch set, communication will conflict.

For CAN bus connections, baud rate is typically fixed and does not require manual configuration.

5

Set the correct battery count and total capacity

The inverter needs to know the exact configuration of your Pylontech stack:

Number of modules: Must match the physical stack count
Total capacity: Number of modules × capacity per module (e.g. 3 × US5000 = 14.4kWh)
After adding a module: Update both the count and total capacity on the inverter

If the capacity setting doesn't match the physical stack — common after adding extra modules — the inverter's charge and discharge calculations go wrong. It may stop charging early, refuse to discharge below a phantom threshold, or report a capacity mismatch error.

Some inverters auto-detect the module count via PYLON protocol. Even then, verify the detected count matches reality.

Why Pylontech pairing issues are so common

Pylontech is one of the most widely deployed battery brands in the UK because it works with almost any hybrid inverter. That flexibility is a strength, but it also means every installation requires correct configuration on the inverter side. Unlike closed systems (GivEnergy, Fox ESS) where the battery and inverter are designed to work together out of the box, a Pylontech pairing needs the installer to set the right battery type, communication interface, baud rate, and capacity — and get all of them right.

We see pairing failures most commonly in three situations: new installations where the installer selected "generic lithium" instead of "Pylontech" on the inverter; stack expansions where extra modules were added but the inverter's battery count and capacity were not updated; and inverter replacements where a new inverter was installed but the Pylontech-specific settings were not carried across from the old unit. In all three cases, the physical hardware is fine — the problem is configuration.

FAQ

Inverter compatibility — common questions

Pylontech works with most open-protocol hybrid inverters supporting PYLON protocol over RS485 or CAN bus. Common UK pairings: Solis, Sofar Solar, Victron, LuxPowerTek, and SolaX. GivEnergy and Fox ESS are closed systems — they only work with their own batteries and cannot pair with Pylontech.
The most common cause is the wrong battery type selected on the inverter — "generic lithium" instead of the Pylontech-specific protocol. Other causes: cable in the wrong port (RS485 vs CAN), baud rate mismatch, damaged communication cable, or conflicting DIP switch settings in a multi-module stack.
Both carry the PYLON protocol data but use different physical connections. Most modern pairings use CAN bus (RJ45 cable). Some older setups use RS485. The Pylontech battery has separate ports for each — if the cable is in the wrong port, communication fails silently with no error message. Check your inverter manual for which interface it expects.
Pylontech recommends against mixing different models in the same stack — for example, US3000C with US5000 modules. While they are all 48V, different models have different cell configurations and capacities. Mixing can cause cell imbalance and BMS protection trips. When expanding, use the same model as your existing modules wherever possible.
Most pairing issues are configuration problems resolved remotely. Our free remote diagnostic covers the full communication audit — battery type, protocol, baud rate, cable routing, and capacity configuration. If the issue is a physical cable fault or DIP switch error, we provide a clear specification for on-site resolution.
