I have a GivEnergy system consisting of two batteries, two inverters and a controlling EMS (Energy Management System) which has not worked since Nov 2025. After six months I discovered Solar Tech Support, reached out to them and Ron phoned me back – how often do you get that service? Could not be more helpful – worked directly with me over the phone, outside what I would call normal working hours. Lucid explanations and we were able to discuss the issues and history using camera and email history. As this was a very rare setup, Ron was able to access an EMS expert in the field to confirm the solution. One sunny day in, I am now only paying for standing charge and a few pence for spikes in grid consumption while battery catches up with house demand.

When my GivEnergy system had an issue, I was completely left without support and had honestly lost all hope. Thankfully, I searched online and found Ron, which completely turned things around. After sending him a message, he responded incredibly fast and called me to assure me that he would get the problem fixed. I really admire his dedicated, supportive nature and his determination to find a solution. With this kind of outstanding attitude and customer service, he has absolutely secured a future customer in me.

Ron want out of is way to help, nothing was to much. He was very thorough in what he did Very knowledgeable I would highly recommend Ron and his company He did a fantastic job for me. if you have any problems, he'll do his best to help you out and resolve your problem. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them

Ron took me through a diagnostic to confirm my GivEnergy Inverter had a fault. A common one as it turns out with the AC Inverter. As GivEnergy is defunct there is no immediate fix, aside from sourcing 2nd hand replacement. It may be that a fix becomes available over the summer which would make a lot of GivEnergy customers happy (Again)

Contacted Solar Tech Support in desperation. After explaining the issues I had with my system a diagnosis was made and a solution proposed. Fantastic service, even contacted a manufacturer to arrange replacement parts for me. Great communications, explained all they were doing and what I had to do, clearly and precisly. Followed up to confirm all was ok. Excellent service.

After GivEnergy went into liquidation, just my luck, my battery started playing up (internal board crashed). Contacted my installer - not interested! Found Solar tech support on a Google search. Sooo glad I found this company! Ron is extremely helpful and has plenty of experience. He soon confirmed what the fault was, and helped me to get my system up and running again. Now moved my GivEnergy account to Solar tech support, and will definitely use again if I have more issues. Unusual to find such a helpful company in these times, no morons reading scripts, just direct contact with the engineer.

Contacted Solar Tech Support when trying to understand what my Givenergy inverter problem might be and what might be my options. Received good/honest advise which backed up my thoughts.

Ron is a super star. Two months ago my GivEnergy battery failed a firmware upgrade leaving it a brick. My installer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. GivEnergy couldn't/wouldn't fix it. Then they went into administration and all hope was lost. A flurry of emails later and Ron had diagnosed the fault (failed USB flash drive, something I'd suspected) and talked me through resolving it. Two months of nothing resolved in about 3 hours. It's great to work with someone who pays attention to the details, knows that they're doing (not just following a script) and gets stuff sorted without a fuss or up-charging.

I can add to the list of customers who had already 'given up' on GivEnergy due to their appalling customer service, and that was before they went into administration (their Trustpilot reviews don't lie!). So you can imagine my desperation when, having changed my ISP and my Inverter, predictably, proving to be the only device that didn't connect automatically to my new network, I found zero prospect of any customer support with GivEnergy having called in the administrators just five days earlier! The salvation came from Solar Tech Support. My IT advisor stumbled across their web site and some very helpful tips for beleaguered GivEnergy customers, as well as an offer to provide direct assistance. Nothing ventured, I decided to drop them an E-Mail, with very low expectations based on my experience of GivEnergy customer support. Within an hour Ron had responded with some pin point advice, and after a few exchanges of E-Mails he had nailed the problem, enabling the combined efforts of my IT advisor and solar installer to resolve it and reconnect my Inverter. Thank you Solar Tech Support, and Ron in particular, for coming to the aid of a deserted and despondent GivEnergy customer. Expert, razor sharp advice and first class customer service, even though I wasn't officially a customer.

This company are a rare gem, I had a very unusual problem following a failed firmware upgrade on my GivEnergy kit. I then found out GivEnergy were in administration and had dismissed all their support staff! None of the usual fixes to try and restore my inverter comms would work, and I looked everywhere, forums, GivEnergy youtube support videos - even AI couldn't figure it out. My installer was talking about huge sums for system replacements, and being vague / evasive about if they'd even install replacement GivEnergy inverter. Enter Solar Tech Support, reassuring and knowledgeable from the very start, I've learnt loads about my solar system though the friendly chat while my engineer worked as he diagnosed the problem and figured out a fix procedure that I've not found anywhere else - amazing . If you need solar system repairs - especially if you like me have been left high and dry by GivEnergy, I cannot recommend this company enough. Give them a call.

I sent a message on their website regarding a problem I have on my Givenergy system. Although not supplied by Ronald, I thought it was worth an email. Within the hour on a Saturday, he phoned and we discussed the problem. He logged in remotely and gave excellent advice. I'm too far away for his on-site help but he did diagnose the problem and was happy also to chat through my thoughts about an upcoming solar/battery install I'm planning. Great bloke.... if only he was nearer!

Overview

What are GivEnergy Events?

GivEnergy Events are a demand response programme — also called GivBack — that pays battery owners for allowing GivEnergy to automatically manage their batteries during periods of grid stress. This is part of a wider effort to balance the UK electricity grid as more renewable energy comes online.

1
Events happen between 4 PM and 8 PM

GivEnergy Events take place between 4 PM and 8 PM on weekdays. This is the peak grid demand period — when household electricity consumption is highest and grid operators need flexible assets to balance supply and demand. Batteries are ideal for this because they can respond immediately.

2
Your battery is controlled automatically

During a GivEnergy Event, your battery's charge and discharge behaviour is automatically managed by GivEnergy. Typically, this means the battery will discharge to cover household load (reducing your grid import demand) during the event window. You don't need to do anything — it happens automatically.

3
You get paid for participating

In exchange for making your battery available for demand response, GivEnergy pay you monthly. The payment amount depends on your battery's contribution during each event. Payments are made with a 3-month delay (January events paid in April, for example).

4
You're notified before events

GivEnergy notify participants before a scheduled event via the GivBack app. You'll know an event is coming — you just don't have the option to skip individual ones if you're opted in.

Eligibility
Requirements

Who can join the GivEnergy Events Programme?

There are three requirements to join GivBack. All three must be met — check these before signing up.

🔋

Compatible GivEnergy system

You need a compatible GivEnergy inverter and battery system. Most GivEnergy hybrid inverters and battery combinations qualify. Check the GivBack app or GivEnergy's website for a current list of compatible hardware.

📊

Smart meter installed

A smart meter must be installed at your property. Standard analogue or digital meters are not eligible. Smart meters allow GivEnergy and the grid operator to accurately measure your demand response contribution during events.

🇬🇧

England, Wales, or Scotland

The GivEnergy Events Programme is available to properties in England, Wales, and Scotland. It is not currently available in Northern Ireland or the Channel Islands.

How to join

Signing up for GivEnergy Events

The sign-up process is managed through the separate GivBack app — not the main GivEnergy monitoring app. This is an important distinction that trips up many users.

1
Download the GivBack app (not the GivEnergy app)

The GivBack programme uses a separate dedicated app called GivBack. It is not the same as the main GivEnergy monitoring app. Search for "GivBack" in the App Store or Google Play. Do not try to sign up through the main GivEnergy portal or app — it won't be there.

2
Create a GivBack account and link your system

Create an account in the GivBack app and link it to your GivEnergy system. You'll need your GivEnergy portal login or inverter serial number to connect the accounts. Your smart meter details will also be verified at this stage.

3
Opt in — all-or-nothing participation

Use the GivBack app to opt in to the Events Programme. Participation is all-or-nothing — when you opt in, you agree to participate in all qualifying events. You cannot choose to skip individual events while remaining enrolled. You can opt out of the programme entirely at any time.

During events
Event behaviour

What happens to your battery during a GivEnergy Event

Understanding what GivEnergy does to your battery during an event helps you plan your energy usage and avoid surprises when you check your monitoring data.

Battery discharge during the event window

During a GivEnergy Event, your battery will typically be commanded to discharge to cover household load between 4 PM and 8 PM. This reduces your grid import during the peak period, which is exactly what the demand response programme is trying to achieve.

For you as a household, this means your battery may be more depleted than usual going into the evening. If you were planning to use battery power overnight for cheap-rate avoidance, ensure your overnight charge schedule accounts for the lower starting SoC.

Automatic control overrides your settings

During an event, GivEnergy's automated system takes control of your battery's charge/discharge behaviour. Your regular portal schedule and system mode settings are temporarily overridden for the duration of the event. Your settings are restored automatically when the event ends.

Note: If you see unexpected battery behaviour in your monitoring data during a 4–8 PM window on a weekday, check the GivBack app — it may have been an event day.

Notification before events

You receive a notification via the GivBack app before a scheduled event. This gives you time to plan around the event — for example, pre-charging appliances before 4 PM or adjusting your household usage during the event window. Events are typically announced the day before or morning of the event.

Payments
Getting rewarded

GivEnergy Events payments — how and when you get paid

GivBack payments are made monthly, but with a significant delay. Understanding this avoids confusion when you don't see payment arrive the month after an event.

The 3-month payment delay

GivBack payments are made monthly but with a 3-month delay. This delay exists because GivEnergy and their grid partners need time to verify, calculate, and process the demand response data for each event before payments can be issued.

Payment timeline example:
Events in January → Paid in April
Events in February → Paid in May
Events in October → Paid in January

How payments are calculated

Payments are based on your battery's contribution during each event — how much demand it helped reduce during the 4–8 PM window, measured through your smart meter. A larger battery contributing more demand reduction will receive higher payments than a smaller system or one with low available charge at the time of the event.

Payment details and event history are visible in the GivBack app. Refer to GivEnergy's GivBack documentation for the current payment rate structure — rates can change between programme seasons.

Opting out of GivEnergy Events

If you no longer want to participate in the Events Programme, you can opt out entirely via the GivBack app. Once opted out, your battery will no longer be controlled during events and you will stop earning event payments. Remember: you cannot selectively skip individual events — it's all-in or all-out.

FAQ

GivEnergy Events questions

GivEnergy Events (GivBack) is a demand response programme that pays battery owners to allow GivEnergy to automatically control their batteries during grid stress events between 4 PM and 8 PM. During events, your battery discharges to cover household load, reducing grid demand at the peak period. You receive monthly payments with a 3-month delay for participating.
Yes. A smart meter is a mandatory requirement for the GivEnergy Events Programme. Smart meters allow accurate measurement of your demand response contribution during events. If you don't have a smart meter, you will need to request one from your energy supplier before you can participate.
No. The GivEnergy Events Programme uses an all-or-nothing model. When you opt in, you agree to participate in all qualifying events. You cannot skip individual events while remaining enrolled. You can opt out of the programme entirely at any time via the GivBack app — after opting out, your battery will no longer be controlled during events and you will stop earning payments.
GivBack payments are made monthly but with a 3-month delay. Events in January are paid in April, February events in May, and so on. This delay is due to the time required to verify and process demand response data. Payments and event history are visible in the GivBack app.
No. GivBack is a separate app from the main GivEnergy monitoring app. You need to download GivBack specifically to sign up for and manage your Events participation. The main GivEnergy app and the givenergy.cloud portal are for monitoring and configuration — the Events Programme and payment management are handled exclusively through the GivBack app.
